Punggi, in Yeongju City, North Gyeongsang Province, has been famous for ginseng cultivation on the Korean Peninsula since the 1500s. Kang Sung-chan, CEO of Sobaek Insam Farming Association, manages 9.3 hectares of ginseng fields in the area with four other farmers who are members of the association. Over four decades of experience, Kang has honed his skills in cultivating top-quality ginseng. He was recognized as a certified "Ginseng Master" in 2010, solidifying his position as one of Korea's foremost ginseng experts. Drawing on his wealth of experience and knowledge, Kang has implemented several innovative techniques to improve the quality and yield of his ginseng. He strategically installed sunshades in his ginseng fields to improve ventilation and deter pests. He also carefully removed weeds around the sunshades to further reduce pest damage and carefully regulated the amount of light to help the ginseng adapt to high temperatures. As a result of these measures, Kang's ginseng has a robust texture and yields have increased significantly due to reduced pest damage.

 

 

Sobaek Insam Farming Association, which produces and exports world-class red ginseng products from Korea's representative "Punggi Ginseng", is also widely known under the brand name "Sobaek Korea". In the pristine area at the foot of Mt. Sobaek, the company produces red ginseng from ginseng roots grown for five or six years and uses it to make various red ginseng products for sale at home and abroad. Over the past five years, about 380 tons of ginseng have been used to make Sobaek Korea's products. About 75 percent came from Kang's ginseng farm. The rest came from member farmers of the Sobaek Farmers' Association. This amounts to about KRW 5.5 billion. The company also exports ginseng harvested directly from the fields, known as susam, while distributing it domestically.

 

 

Sobaek Insam Farming Association produces and supplies a variety of products, including red ginseng concentrate, which is its flagship product, red ginseng liquid, red ginseng concentrate stick, red ginseng slices, red ginseng tablets, red ginseng candy, red ginseng face wash, red ginseng honey tea, and red ginseng yakgwa (honey cookie). Red Ginseng Concentrate is a 100% pure red ginseng concentrate product made by extracting red ginseng using only 6-year-old Punggi ginseng hand-cultivated for a long time in the traditional Korean method. It is a healthy functional food that improves immunity, fatigue recovery, platelet inhibition and blood circulation. Red Ginseng Concentrate Premium and Red Ginseng Concentrate Double Plus are available, each in a 240g bottle with a remarkable saponin content of 11mg per gram. The Red Ginseng Concentrate Premium, priced at KRW 160,000, offers a saponin content of 6.5 mg per gram and has a shelf life of 36 months.
The Red Ginseng Honey Tea comes in a 500g bottle. It is a liquid honey tea used in various dishes as a sugar infused liquid that comes out after thinly slicing six-year-old red ginseng and processing them with honey and sugar. It is a light brown liquid tea with 5.2% red ginseng concentrate, honey and fructose. It can be enjoyed warm as a soothing tea. The consumer price is KRW 10,000 and the shelf life is 24 months. The Red Ginseng Powder is a pure red ginseng product that is meticulously made into a powder that can be used in both hot and cold beverages and various culinary dishes. There is also the Red Ginseng Yakgwa, which is made with 3% of five-year-old red ginseng slices. For children, the red ginseng concentrate is available in two flavors: strawberry and apple. They are packaged in 10 grams and 15 pieces, respectively. The raw materials for the strawberry flavored product are red ginseng extract, pear concentrate juice, strawberry concentrate, red ginseng concentrate and natural strawberry flavor.

 

 

Sobaek Insam Farming Association has been steadily exporting ginseng and red ginseng to the United States, Vietnam, Hong Kong, China and other countries for over 15 years. This success can be attributed to the company's strategic marketing initiatives tailored to overseas markets. Since its establishment in 1997, the company has achieved a cumulative sales volume of USD 15 million. In the past five years, the company has exported about USD 10 million worth of products, including USD 2.2 million worth of water ginseng and USD 8 million worth of red ginseng processed products. In the 27 years since its establishment, the company has exported more than 25 million pieces of ginseng and red ginseng products. Since 2011, the company has consistently exported USD 400,000 worth of red ginseng products annually to prominent retailers such as Park N Shop and City Super. In addition, the company has successfully penetrated Chinese online shopping platforms such as VIP.COM and TAOBAO-MALL.
